Cooperative Grant - GIS
In 1994, the Department of Planning received a cooperative grant for $72,249 to develop an entry level information system in conjunction with the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, using as a model the design and implementation of Westchester County’s Geographic Information System (GIS).  The system was set up to operate within the pc environment with a desktop GIS software package designed specifically for the non-technical user, and created a digital tax parcel base map linked to tax parcel information maintained by the NYS Division of Equalization and Assessment.

Digitization of Property Maps Collection Grant
The Archives division of the County Clerk’s Office, working with the then County Information Systems Dept., received a grant in 1995 for $100,000 to complete a project that had begun in 1989: the digitization of the property maps collection that included a substantial number of municipal, zoning, environmental, water-shed and land-use maps.  This grant provided funds to an outside vendor to scan 22,400 maps dated 1910-1966 and to allow IS to develop an interface to enable the public to view the scanned map images on the same type of County Clerk workstation with the deeds and mortgage images and their indexes.

Grant to Purge Outdated Legal Files
In 1999, the Records Center unit, working with the County Clerk’s Office, received grant funds totaling $20,300 to conduct a purge of outdated legal files that after examination may be destroyed.  1,657 cu. ft. of County Clerk files were examined; the purge resulted in the destruction of 28% of that number or 473 cu. ft.

Historical Website Grant
In 2000, The Westchester County Archives received a cooperative grant for $15,828 to develop a website that would bring the County’s rich primary historical records online.  Collaborating with the Archives were the Westchester County Historical Society, the City of White Plains and the Town of Eastchester.  Known as Westchester County’s Virtual Archives, the pilot project for the website focused on the Civil War Era in Westchester County.

Grant for Imaging 14 Sets of Aerial Photographs
In 2003, the Archives received a grant for $11,576 on behalf of the Planning Dept. to develop the most beneficial and cost-efficient method for imaging the county’s 14 sets of aerial photographs (6,000), thereby allowing for their continued use by the public through a pc workstation in the Planning Dept. offices.   The original photos will be saved from further degradation from overuse; they will be catalogued and stored in climate-controlled conditions at the County Archives.
