Located in the Department of Environmental Facilities – Various Locations: Under general supervision of a higher level maintenance or administrative position, incumbents perform skilled mechanical repairs and maintenance of heavy equipment (gasoline or diesel self-propelled and non-self-propelled engine equipment); repair hydraulic and anti-lock computerized brake systems, automotive and heavy truck suspension, and charge and repair air-conditioning systems. Incumbents are responsible for a wide variety of repairs and maintenance work on all types of landfill, automotive, diesel and heavy equipment vehicles. This position is not intended to accommodate those who perform maintenance and repair exclusively on "passenger cars".  In addition, this class is responsible for carrying out a preventive maintenance program, required maintenance, and mechanical repairs on disabled equipment in the field.  This position is distinguished from Auto Mechanic II in that the higher level position requires possession of various licenses (see below).  Supervision may be exercised over lower level mechanics in a leadership and training role.  Does related work as required. 

 

REQUIRED: Either: (a) high school, equivalency or automotive trade school diploma and four years of experience where the primary responsibility of the position was in both automotive and heavy equipment diagnostic and repair work; or (b) eight years of experience as described in (a); or (c) a satisfactory equivalent combination of the foregoing training and experience as defined by the limits of (a) and (b).

 

SUBSTITUTION:  Satisfactory completion of 30 credits of post-high school education in the field of automotive repair or maintenance, or closely related field, may be substituted for one year of the above stated experience.

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

 

  1. Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License, Class A, including a Tow Truck Endorsement and Medical Examiner’s Certificate for Inter-state driving; AND

 

2.     Possession of a New York State Motor Vehicle Inspector License with Light vehicle, Heavy vehicle, Motorcycles, and Dyno-Emission endorsements; AND

 

3.     Possession of a valid Air Conditioning Recycling License, issued by an EPA approved organization

Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.

Located in the Department of Laboratories and Research – Valhalla: Under supervision of a higher level professional, an incumbent of this position is responsible for conducting various environmental organic chemical and physical analysis of water, wastewater, soil and other environmental samples, and for planning and coordinating the work of subordinate laboratory personnel performing these examinations to insure that all tests adhere to established quality control standards of proficiency. The incumbent must maintain a satisfactory rating of performance for those procedures for which approval has been granted to the laboratory by the New York State Department of Health. Supervision is exercised over subordinate laboratory personnel. Does related work as required.  

 

REQUIRED: A Bachelor's Degree* in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a Biological Science, which must have included twenty credits in chemistry, and four years of professional environmental organic chemistry laboratory experience**, or related chemistry experience with instrumentation or methodology used in an environmental organic chemistry laboratory, using a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer system.

 

SUBSTITUTION: A Master's Degree* in Chemistry, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering or related field may be substituted for one year of the above required environmental organic chemistry experience.

REQUIRED: A Bachelor’s Degree* and either:  (a) three years of experience (pre or post degree) in a law enforcement agency where the primary function of the position was working with and analyzing criminal information, which included using SPSS, ArcView/ArcGIS, Analysts Notebook or similar applications; or (b) three years of experience (pre or post degree) where the primary function of the position was using SPSS, ArcView/ArcGIS, Analysts Notebook or similar applications, which included responsibility for preparing and providing data, performing statistical analyses, creating tables, etc.; or (c) three years of experience (pre or post degree) where the primary function of the position was conducting investigative work in or for a law enforcement agency and which involved analyzing criminal information using SPSS, ArcView/ArcGIS, Analysts Notebook or similar applications; or (d) four years of experience (pre or post degree) where the primary function of the position was performing research, data analysis and analytical report preparation using automated systems; or (e) a satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b), (c) and (d).

Located in the Department of Parks, Recreation and Conservation – Rye (Rotating Shifts): Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class performs a wide variety of journeyman level plumbing maintenance and installation work including the layout of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence, but in most instances, results from written or oral instructions. The incumbent may function as a lead worker on specific projects or as part of a crew and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with the full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman assists in the planning of repairs and alterations, making estimates of material costs and staffing requirements. Responsibilities also include determining methods, techniques, materials, and devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this level may be completed with little or no check during progress or on completion. Supervisor may check overall work to see that it meets trade standards. Supervision may be exercised over lower-level maintenance personnel. Does related work as required.

 

REQUIRED: Either:  (a) high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience in the trade; or (b) four years full-time experience under a journeyman which provided training and experience equivalent to that given in an apprenticeship program

 

NOTES:  (1) Apprenticeship training in plumbing, or training gained by the completion of technical courses in the trade or at a school, institute or branch of the Armed Services may be substituted on a year for year basis.
