Responsibilities involve assisting in the development of syllabi and instructional activities, developing and implementing projects and grants, and maintaining liaison with various institutions involved in providing educational services. This class differs from Program Administrator (WCC) by the size and scope of programs and nature and scope of supervision. Located in the Westchester Community College – Valhalla - Under general supervision an incumbent performs a wide variety of journeyman level maintenance and repair on heating/ventilating and air-conditioning systems. The position includes the lay out of jobs sufficiently complex to require advance planning and the maintenance of necessary supplies and records. Work is performed with considerable independence, and may be initiated by oral or written instructions and in accordance with a preventive maintenance schedule. Incumbent may work alone, as part of a crew or function as lead worker on specific projects and may supervise a number of lower level maintenance and labor employees. The journeyman is fully proficient in the skills and practices of the trade, with full knowledge of the principles, tools and techniques. The journeyman has responsibility for determining methods, techniques, materials, and/or devices best suited to complete projects. Work at this grade is completed with little or no check during progress or on completion; however supervisors periodically check overall work to see that it meets trade standards. Does related work as required. 

 

REQUIRED: Either:  (a) high school or equivalency diploma and four years of experience where the primary function of the position was mechanical repair, maintenance and installation, two years of which must have been in a wide variety of HVAC equipment including pumps, motors, chillers, fans, etc.; or (b) graduation from a high school level vocational course and three years experience in the trade; or (c) completion of a two year post high school or trade school course* and two years experience as stated in (a); or (d) seven years work experience, five of which must have been as stated in (a); or (e) a satisfactory equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (a), (b), (c) and (d). 

 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:  Depending on work assignment, must meet standards of OSHA regulation 1910.134 Respiratory Protection, and will be required to meet Federal, State and local standards with respect to health and safety.

Located in the Department of Labs and Research – Valhalla: Under the general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for supervising the operation of the manual and automated microbiology laboratory for the examination of bacteria, mycobacteria, fungi and parasites. The incumbent either coordinates the activities of technical and professional staff, provides technical expertise in the examination of specimens using biochemical and microbiological procedures leading to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases; or functions as the quality assurance/quality control manager for the Division of Microbiological Services. Responsibilities include examination of specimens and communication of test results and test interpretation to physicians and other health officials. Supervision is exercised over a number of subordinate professional and technical staff.  The incumbent must maintain a satisfactory rating of performance by the New York State Department of Health for those procedures for which approval has been granted to the laboratory. An incumbent of this class must be available for emergency, weekend and holiday work situations. Does related work as required.

 

REQUIRED: A Bachelor's Degree* in Medical Technology or a biological science and seven years of clinical microbiology experience in an approved medical, hospital or public health laboratory, three years of which must have included supervisory experience and either (A) at time of permanent appointment, must possess license and current registration issued by the New York State Department of Education as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist, or (B) at time of temporary appointment, must possess a limited permit issued by the New York State Department of Education as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist.

 

SUBSTITUTION:  A Master’s Degree in Microbiology or the biological sciences may be substituted for at the rate of 30 credits for each year of the general experience in microbiology.
