1920 - 1983: Westchester Comes of Age |
Shopping Area in Scarsdale, New York
The Medieval Revival style of architecture, commonly known as Tudor, reached a peak of popularity in lower Westchester County following World War I. The Medieval Revival style was carried over into the business areas of many lower Westchester towns as shown in this picture. Shops, apartment houses, and even gas stations took on the Tudor look that during the 1920's became synonymous with stylish suburban living. Pelham, Larchmont, and Mount Vernon, among other towns, have many fine Tudor homes. Other residential styles popular between World War I and the Depression included Spanish Colonial Revival, Mission, and the perennial Georgian and Federal Revival. |
