The Westchester Hispanic Advisory Board, formed in 1998, advises
and assists the county executive on public policy relating to
Hispanic Americans in Westchester County.
The Hispanic Advisory Board serves as a liaison between county
government and the community. For more information contact
Robin Bikkal at www.bikkal@sblwyers.com
As a result of the board's efforts, the following
gains have been made:
- The
county position of Hispanic liaison to the county executive was
created in 2002. The county's new liaison is Martha Lopez-Hanratty, a
New Rochelle resident with over 20 years of community service
experience in this county.
- The
county position of official translator was created in order to help
fulfill the need for translation of many important documents issued
by the county. Adelita Davis, who holds the position, is a graduate of Brown University and
previously worked with the community of New Rochelle.
- A
report of current conditions affecting the Hispanic community in
Westchester was issued and presented to the county executive in
order to help him better serve the community. The board is
using current information provided by the different county
departments to update this report.
- Six
Hispanic summit conferences have been held in collaboration with the Office for
Hispanic Affairs thanks to the leadership of Martha Lopez-Hanratty. The
summits were a great success and were attended by various Hispanic
leaders in the county as well as elected officials and official
representatives of many foreign consulates.
- The
creation of new athletic fields throughout Westchester County is
currently on the county agenda, due in great measure to strong
advocacy by the Hispanic Advisory Board and members of the Hispanic
community.
