West Nile Carriers

 

These are the six species of mosquitoes known to carry West Nile virus. 

Culex Pipiens (Northern House Mosquito)
Flight Distance: 1/4 mile - 1 mile
Feeding times: dusk to dawn
Habitat: stagnant pools, manmade containers Timing: late Spring to Fall

Culex Pipien Mosquito

Culex Restuans (Northern House Mosquito)
Flight Distance: 1/2 mile - 1 mile
Feeding times: dusk to dawn
Habitat: stagnant pools, manmade containers 
Timing: early Spring to late Fall

Culex Salinarius (Northern House Mosquito)
Flight Distance: Up to 5 miles
Feeding times: dusk to dawn
Habitat: brackish or fresh water near shore
Timing: early Spring to November

Aedes Triseriatus (Eastern Treehole Mosquito)
Flight Distance: 1/2 mile - 1 mile
Feeding times: anytime
Habitat: man-made containers, tree holes
Timing: late May through September

Aedes Triseriatus (Eastern Treehole Mosquito)

Aedes Vexans (Floodwater Mosquito)
Flight Distance: 5 miles or more
Feeding times: anytime
Habitat: temporary rain pools in open areas
Timing: late May through Fall, following heavy rains

Aedes Vexans (Floodwater Mosquito)

Aedes Japonicus (new mosquito to this part of the world)
Flight Distance: 1/2 mile - 1 mile
Feeding times: daytime
Habitat: man-made containers
Timing: can appear as early as February, through Fall
