Westchester County’s WIC Program provides
supplemental foods, nutrition education, and health care referrals to
low-income pregnant, postpartum, and breastfeeding women, infants and
children up to age five. The program serves about 9,000 women, infants
and children a year through WIC offices in White Plains, Port Chester,
and Yonkers.
Starting in January, 2009, WIC clients can use their WIC funds to buy
fruits and vegetables, certain whole grain breads and brown rice, canned
or dried beans, and jars of baby foods. These new options are intended
to help combat the epidemic of childhood obesity and the increase in
Type 2 diabetes and hypertension by offering choices that are lower in
fat and higher in fiber than other foods.
To help WIC clients reduce their consumption of fat, women and children
over age two are eligible to receive only non-fat (skim) or low-fat (1%
milk) through the WIC program. Whole milk is restricted to children 12
to 24 months old.
In keeping with WIC’s commitment to breastfeeding, the new list of
WIC-approved foods is designed to support breastfeeding mothers and
their infants. WIC will continue to offer infant formula; but the amount
of formula offered each month will vary based on the growth and
development needs of the infant.
