Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Gonorrhea and Chlamydia continue to be public health problems in Westchester.  The steady progress in controlling syphilis since 1994 was offset by an outbreak of early syphilis in 2001, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM).  The Department of Health is aggressively controlling the outbreak through case investigation and targeted education.  Infections caused by Chlamydia are the most common, curable and among the most damaging of all STDs in the United States.  Chlamydia is the most commonly reported communicable disease in Westchester County.  Effective January 1, 1999, Westchester County became the first county in New York State, except for New York City, to mandate reporting of Chlamydia.    The Department of Health is working to address this important issue through partner notification and contact tracing.
