4th Case of St. Louis Encephalitis Confirmed in Westchester

The Westchester County Department of Health today confirmed a fourth case of St. Louis encephalitis in a Westchester County resident. This fourth case, which was previously identified as highly probable, is now confirmed. One confirmed case is from Mount Vernon, one confirmed case is from Post Chester, and two confirmed cases are from Yonkers (one with a Bronxville mailing address).

In consultation with the New York City Health Department, the New York State Health Department, and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control, Westchester County has identified the need for aerial spraying. The mosquito spraying will be conducted on Thursday evening, September 23, 1999 between 7 and 9 p.m. according to the following schedule:

  • The municipalities of Yonkers, Pelham, New Rochelle, Mount Vernon and Pelham Manor from the Bronx border to the Cross County Parkway.
  • The area from the Cross County Parkway to Echo Bay on the east. This includes the area south of Sixth Street and Lincoln Avenue in Mount Vernon, and south of Memorial Parkway and to the east of Huguenot Street in New Rochelle.
  • To the west, the area from the Cross County Parkway to Larkin Square in Yonkers and the area south of Ashburton Avenue in Yonkers.

 

On Friday evening, September 24, 1999 between 7 and 9 p.m.:

  • Communities between the Hutchinson River Parkway and the Long Island Sound will be sprayed. This area includes the municipalities of Rye Brook, Rye, Port Chester, Harrison, Mamaroneck, Larchmont and New Rochelle. Additional schedules for spraying will be announced shortly.

The schedule for additional pesticide spraying for Saturday, September 25, 1999 and Sunday, September 26, 1999 will be released on Friday, September 24, 1999 to media and municipal officials.
