National Public Health Week 1999         (914) 637-4715

During the week of April 4-10, 1999, Westchester County will observe National Public Health Week. "Public Health Week gives us the chance to emphasize the important role that public health plays in the overall health care delivery system," stated Dr. Harold N. Adel, Westchester County Commissioner of Health.

"Most of the improvements in life expectancy that have been achieved since the turn of the century are due to public health activities, at the national, state and local levels," said Dr. Adel. "Public health has contributed to declines in heart disease and stroke, infectious disease, and environmental and occupational disease and injuries. Public health efforts have also contributed to the virtual elimination of polio, the control of childhood diseases, declines in dental problems, and reductions in childhood lead levels. Public health also keeps our drinking water clean and our food supplies safe," he added.

During National Public Health Week, the Westchester County Department of

Health urges residents to take advantage of its many programs:

The Health Department’s new video, "Protecting the Health of the Public," explains the many programs the Health Department offers. Any community group interested in the free video can contact the Health Department at (914) 813-5000.

A wide range of services such as immunizations; lead screenings for children; HIV counseling and testing; tuberculosis screening and education; and clinics for family planning, dental care, and sexually transmitted diseases are offered at Health Department District Offices, located in Yonkers, New Rochelle, Port Chester and White Plains. In addition, the American Public Health Association’s new coloring book, "Public Health and Me," will be available for children at the district offices.

Low-cost mammograms and cervical cancer screenings, as well as free breast examinations and information on breast self-examination, are offered at multiple screening sites across the County.

Low-cost rabies clinics, to assist residents with having their pets vaccinated, are offered periodically at different animal hospitals throughout the County.

In recognition of National Public Health Week, officials at the Westchester County Department of Laboratories and Research Public Health Laboratories will be showcasing some of their many accomplishments in protecting the health of Westchester County citizens. The Department of Laboratories and Research will offer one-hour tours of the laboratory on Tuesday, April 6 and Thursday, April 8, from 1:00pm -3:30pm. For additional information, call (914) 593-5564.

Dr. Adel said that National Public Health Week is a good time to recognize the efforts of public health professionals who work tirelessly to prevent illness by promoting healthful behaviors. "Their efforts enhance the health and well-being of all our residents," he said.
