FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE                                                                                August 2, 2000

WESTCHESTER COUNTY BEACHES WILL REOPEN ON THURSDAY, AUGUST 3

The Westchester County Department of Health today announced that all beaches that were closed due to sewage discharge into the Long Island Sound will reopen tomorrow, August 3, 2000. Harbor Island, which has been closed all season due to elevated bacteria counts, will remain closed.

The beaches were closed as a precautionary measure due to a sewage pump by-pass at the Park Avenue sewage pump station, the Beach Avenue sewage pump station and the Flint Avenue sewage pump station in the Village of Larchmont; the Saxon Wood sewage pump station in Marmaroneck; and the Sutton Manor Pump Station in New Rochelle. Rain-diluted waste effluent had been chlorinated and discharged into the Long Island Sound.

The beaches that will reopen are:

·        New Rochelle beaches: Echo Bay Yacht Club; Hudson Park; Marina's Edge; New Rochelle Rowing Club; San Souci; Davenport Yacht Club; Surf Club; Greentree Club; VIP Club; Beckwith Pointe; Glen Island

·        Larchmont beaches: Larchmont Manor Park Beach; Larchmont Shore Club

·        Mamaroneck beaches: Beach Point Club; Mamaroneck Beach Yacht and Cabana Club; Shore Acres Point Club; Orienta Club
