WELLNESS WARRIORS

Mamaroneck Avenue School (MAS) is now participating in Westchester County’s Fit Kids program. The Wellness Committee at MAS has a commitment to our students.  We would like to teach them healthy food choice and increase activity in an effort to combat the rise in childhood obesity and set the frame for adult wellness.  We meet regularly to discuss and plan activities that will help us achieve our goals.  Our current agenda includes the following:

·         Wellness Wednesdays quiz.  A health or nutrition question is read over the PA system on Wednesdays AM and each lunch period has a chance to give the correct answer.  The winners receive a prize.

·        The MAS students (wellness warriors) will be participating in the development of a Healthy Choice Cookbook. Each class will submit their “winning recipe” for a healthy meal or snack for the cookbook. The 3rd through fifth grades will be submitting the illustrations.  The cookbook will be ready for Valentine’s Day distribution. Each grade may choose to share the recipes as a Valentine’s Day snack.

·        We will also be notifying the parents of our intent and request this year’s Valentine Celebrations be a “healthy snack” party.

·        The week of February 2nd we will be having our Jump Rope for Heart and the lunchtime walking club.

·        We have begun a “make your own salad” bar on Wellness Wednesdays.  It was an overwhelming success at its inaugural debut on January 14th.

Our goal is to keep the kids thinking in terms of life long healthy choices in food and activities.  Following the February break, we will be working on a Health Fair to be held on May 1st.  Details will follow in the future.

Indoor recess has lunchtime gym activities to keep the kids moving.
