Men's Health Initiative

In recent years, men's health issues have gained renewed prominence in the priorities of public health officials and health care providers.  In 1997, the Westchester County Board of Legislators provided funding to the Westchester County Department of Health for the development of a Men's Health Initiative to promote men's health and improve men's health behaviors.

In 1999, professional comedians, trained by the Health Department, gave presentations to groups of Men throughout Westchester County.  These presentations are designed to relax and entertain, while at the same time, provide vital information on serious health issues and concerns.  The performances are focused on opening a dialogue and encouraging men to make their health a priority in their lives.  Audiences for these performances include Unions, Trade Associations, Rotary, Lions and Kiwanis Clubs.

Funding from the New York State Department of Health allowed the Westchester County Department of Health to continue its Men's Health Initiative in 1999.  The initiative was expanded to include information specific to colorectal cancer screening and prostate disease education.  Comedians worked with nurses to promote and encourage colorectal screenings and prostate education among men aged 50 and up.
