In October, 1998, the Westchester County Board of Legislators passed the Hazardous Waste
Point of Sale Notification Law to encourage proper use, storage, and safe disposal of
toxic chemicals and to encourage the use of the least toxic products whenever feasible.
Under this law, all retail establishments which sell
household chemical products are required to display prominent signs
(pdf) warning consumers about the dangers of household chemicals and to make information
available through municipal offices, Health Department district offices, and the
Department of Weights, Measures, and Consumer Protection.
To be in compliance with the law, retail establishments where household chemical products
are on display for sale must post one sign at each point of sale (cash register or
equivalent) in the store and a minimum of one brochure outlining products which require
proper disposal must be available for review by customers.
