Public Health Information & Referrals

  • No heat or hot water in your rental unit?
  • Bat in the house?
  • Sewage spill?
  • Oil or chemical spill?
  • Exposed to a rabid raccoon?
  • Foodborne illness?

Call the Westchester County Department of Health (24 hours, 7 days-per- week) at (914) 813-5000.

The Health Department is always on the job.  You can call us at (914) 813-5000 with public health complaints ranging from rabies incidents to rodent and housing complaints to foodborne illnesses and animal safety issues.   Over 7,000 public health complaints are received annually,  resulting in thousands of inspections by Health Department staff.

After hours, the Health Department responds to public health emergencies such as sewage spill, chemical or oil spills, encounters with potentially rabid animals, lack of heat, foodborne disease outbreaks, and infectious disease concerns.  Each evening a Health Department staff member and a physician respond to emergencies called in to the main Health Department phone number, 914-813-5000.  A taped message gives examples of public health emergencies and pertinent phone numbers after hours.

The Health Department responds to approximately 20,000 telephone requests for information each year, educating residents on a wide range of public health topics.  Materials are available in English, Spanish and other languages.
