How should I prepare for the unexpected?

Most of the preparation for possible terrorist attacks must be done by federal, state, and local governmental agencies, which are on heightened alert and addressing the breaking issues with alacrity. However, there are some preparations that individuals can make to prepare for possible terrorist attacks:

1)
Keep informed.  Stay tuned to local and national media for an understanding of the issues and to hear about potential threats and actions that must be taken.

2)
Make reasonable household preparations, but don’t overdo.  Make the same type of “emergency preparations” that you would for a bad winter storm or hurricane.

·
Check the batteries in your flashlights and radios in case the power goes out;

·
Keep a few days extra food and supplies in the house.

·
Make plans about what you’d do if the heat is out for a few days – do you have a wood stove or would you plan to bundle up with extra blankets or sweaters?

·
Keep your car gasoline tank filled up

·
Have a plan for a household member with special needs

3)
Support local emergency workers, such as police, fire, and emergency responders, as they work to enhance their abilities to cope with potential terrorist events.

4)
Work with local and state legislators to enhance local and regional emergency planning efforts.
