Dry Cleaning Hangers
Dry Cleaning Hangers
Reusing clothes hangers is yet another way to reduce the amount of waste we generate in Westchester County. Wire hangers don't burn at Westchester County's garbage-to-energy plant and since wire hangers are fully recyclable, it make sense to take them back to your dry cleaner.
It's estimated that hundreds of tons of wire clothes hangers are used in our county each year. In 2002, Andy Spano initiated the "Green Team" progra to elevate cleaners' and residents' awareness of the waste reduction and reuse potential of clothes hangers. Green Team dry cleaning members strip off the paper and plastic from the used hangers, put on new paper and reuse the hangers. Since the start of the program, about half of all dry cleaners in Westchester have elected to participate and recycle clothes hangers returned by their customers.

These Westchester County dry cleaners have responded to a Recycling Office survey that they do in fact recycle by reusing clothes hangers returned for that purpose by their customers.
