Free Educational and Technical Services

To assist schools with starting or improving a school recycling program, materials and support are available free of charge from the Westchester County Recycling Office.

Technical assistance for setting up and maintaining a recycling program
Our experts can provide guidelines on what is needed to run a school-wide program. Advice is available on the phone or in person at your school.

Assembly presentations on the reasons and merits for recycling
Our staff will visit your school and provide a slide-show presentation, along with handouts, all geared to educate audiences of all ages on the purpose and benefits of recycling in Westchester County.

Class tours
Tours to the Education Center of the Westchester County Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Yonkers are fun, educational, free of charge and suitable for students of all ages.  Please call (914) 813-5441 to schedule a tour.

Veggie Van
The county has retrofitted one of its vans to run on used vegetable oil - the Veggie Van.  While recycling vegetable oil isn't required by law, it just goes to show what we can recycle.  The van also has videos and educational materials on global warming and other environmental issues, and is available to visit schools on request.

Vinyl stickers for containers
When placed on containers such as a cardboard box,  a plastic pail or a large hamper, these vinyl stickers help distinguish any container as a receptacle for recyclables.

Educational handouts and ideas
Posters, pencils, pamphlets and lesson planning ideas, all produced to promote recycling in Westchester, can be obtained in the quantity needed for your school program. The Quick Recycling Guide is available in printed copies to learn how to separate recyclables for curbside collection. The guide is available in Spanish too.

Recycling website
A link called  Westchester’s Wastewise Schools will acknowledge schools in Westchester that have an operating school-wide recycling program.  To have your school listed as a Westchester Wastewise School,  complete a simple checklist and contact the recycling office.
