HOW TO REDUCE JUNK MAIL
Tips from the county Department of Consumer Protection
While one person’s
junk may be another person’s treasure, almost everyone dislikes getting
too much junk mail. There are things you can do to reduce your
load.
“Junk mail sent out
by retailers and marketers increased 29 percent the last five years,”
said County Executive Andy Spano. “While some people like this, most of
us don’t. There are a few easy steps you can take to reduce the flow of
junk mail.”
The main thing
is to get your name and those of family members off direct mail lists.
The ways to do this are posted at the website of the county Department
of Consumer Protection at
www.westchestergov.com/consumer. Consumers
without access to the Internet may call (914) 995-2155 to receive
information on how to reduce junk mail.
“With over 100
million people signed up for the National Do Not Call registry,
marketers have found that old fashioned ‘snail mail’ is still one of the
best ways to reach potential customers,” said Gary Brown, director of
Consumer Protection. “Unless you take steps to slow the tide of junk
mail, the amount you receive will only increase.”
Brown noted that
the methods will not eliminate all junk mail but should reduce
the amount.
