DoIT helps open doors. The projects described here focus on
accessibility and the creation of a more transparent design.
Several technology initiatives
implemented by DoIT have made access to government services and
information straightforward and convenient. Others have facilitated
the cooperation and productivity of County employees. Learn more

Westchester County Website
|
Westchester County was recently recognized by the
Center for Digital Government as one of the nation's Top10 Digital
Counties. Go
here for more details.
The Internet is a critical and successful means of
communicating to the public in a county that has no television station of
its own. A majority of the adults in the county visited the site in the
last twelve months. The home page changes several times a week and the
site itself went through a complete redesign in 2003.
The
Westchester County Website is the
definitive resource for local news, information and services. It
includes everything from press releases to documents that contractors can
use to submit bids for county work. Westchestergov.com provides an
ideal forum for dialogue and exchange, linking
residents, businesses, and visitors to 40+ County departments and a
plethora of services and news.

Voice Recognition for Consumer Protection |
|
Since
the Web is not always available, we have also started to deploy speech
recognition/interactive voice systems to deliver information to the
public. A
new dollar-saving voice recognition service informs residents of the
lowest gas and heating oil prices in their area. To take advantage of this
unique service, dial
914-995-8710 or visit the
Department of Consumer Protection Website to access a special gas
survey of the 30 lowest priced stations in Westchester County.
Many County departments provide a
wealth of information to the
public over the telephone. This voice recognition project began in 2002
and resulted in technology that allows the public to get information by
speaking to a computer system able to understand human speech. In
spring 2004 usage of the gas/oil price service more than quadrupled after
gas prices soared. Our voice recognition services will continue to
expand in tandem with consumer demand and tech innovation.

E-Government & Public Access |
DoIT knows that e-government means more than just putting
scores of forms online. We go beyond typical Web information by
providing critical information via full powered computer programs on the
Internet, Extranet and Intranet.
The web services listed here are implemented and supported by DoIT.
Worthy of special mention is the online
Community Help Desk,
a system that provides citizens with expert assistance while showing
off the
services Westchester County Government has to offer. To use the
service, users don't need anything more than the problem they want solved.
The advanced "expert system technology" allows users to work through a
series of questions and answers on the web and come out with the services
they need. The Community Help Desk is part of the County's knowledge
management and web initiative effort, which strives to make government
more accessible to the community.

The Archives Center
maintains a popular website at
www.westchesterarchives.com. The public has access on
this site to the Archives’ databases of its collection. In fall
2001, a Virtual Archives was launched in collaboration with the
Westchester County Historical Society and contributing local governments.
Increased and improved public access to historical documents is the prime
goal of this new venture, which is found at the same URL address.
