Westchester Telecom is the name of the 400+ mile fiber optic network that touches almost every area of the County. It is intended to provide telephone voice, videoconferencing, data communications and Internet access. The network has been built by Cablevision’s telecommunications subsidiary, Lightpath. Lightpath provides a means to transport the data and voice, but does not provide management of the network once it arrives inside a building. The County Government can provide network management and support for municipalities, if they wish. The County can also provide other IT services including: E-mail hosting, WAN management, firewall services, DNS hosting and access to various secure applications as part of Telecom Project. The goal of the Westchester Telecom project is simple: to bring modern telecommunications resources to Westchester County. There are several benefits that may be realized from this project. One of the early benefits of Westchester Telecom is that Cablevision can provide telephone service at a highly competitive rate, which may afford immediate savings on telephone service to municipalities in Westchester. The greater benefits of the Westchester Telecom project lie on the data side because it allows for high-speed, modern networking between sites.
The DoIT Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team provides a variety of services to municipalities, including municipal user needs assessments, mapping projects, and training on GIS software packages. |
