Our Survey of
Home Heating Oil Prices
The Westchester County
Department of Consumer Protection surveys
home heating oil companies that serve Westchester, so consumers can compare heating oil costs. Several heating oil companies, previously listed on our page, have declined to provide us with their recent price information and will no longer appear on in the survey.
Also included in the survey is helpful information for consumers, such as the availability of lock-in prices, service contracts, discounts for cash, senior citizen discounts, automatic delivery and 24 hour service.
Helpful Tips For Buying Home Heating Oil and Consumer Tips for Saving Money on Home Heating Bills
are also provided.
The survey is sorted by the
lowest to the highest oil price for the current month or grouped by the location of the oil company. We have also included the
current average price for heating oil.

Home heating oil prices can change quickly and we can't guarantee that
the prices posted on this site are the exact prices you will be offered by
your oil company. The date the prices were collected are indicated in the
survey. Price is only one factor you should consider when selecting a home heating company. Service is also very important.
The Department of Consumer Protection does not and will not recommend
any specific company to home heating oil users. Some oil companies may not be listed on this site.
Companies which fail to respond to us for two (2) consecutive surveys are not listed on the web page.
Find Out:
-
How long has this company been in business ?
-
What is its track record for delivering when supplies are short?
-
Is there someone on hand 24-hours a day, seven days a week (as opposed to just an answering machine) to handle problems?
-
How quickly will the company respond to a problem? Does the company offer credit?
Helpful Tips for
Buying Home Heating Oil:
- Pay
for your oil on delivery when your company offers a discount for cash.
- Take
advantage of large delivery discounts and Senior Citizen price reductions.
- If
your company uses an “automatic delivery” system that estimates how much
oil you use in a year, find out how they determine that and when your next
delivery is expected. You may be able to save money when prices change
wildly by delaying or moving up that delivery.
Consumer Tips For Saving
Money on Home Heating Oil Bills:
- Repair broken or cracked glass and putty old
windows; check to see that windows close properly and window locks pull
sashes together.
- Make sure doors close properly; repair or replace
non-working doorknobs, latches and striker plates.
- Weather-strip windows, doors and attic accesses;
caulk the frames around windows and doors from the inside using a clear,
pliable caulk.
- If you have a fireplace, be sure the damper is
closed when the fireplace is not in use.
- Caulk foundation cracks and openings. Make
sure kitchen and bathroom vent dampers close properly.
- Install low flow showerheads and faucet aerators to
save energy and water.
- Reduce your hot water heater temperature to 120
degrees
- Repair leaking hot water faucets, tanks and pipes.
A faucet that leaks one drop of water each second wastes 200 gallons of
water a month.
- Insulate water pipes. This will prevent the
pipes from freezing and will save money on hot water heating costs.
- Have your heating system checked and cleaned
regularly by a heating oil professional for fuel efficiency.
- Install automatic setback thermostats that adjust
the heat to you schedule.
- Insulate attics (especially attics with less than
seven inches of insulation), walls and flooring over unheated
crawl spaces or basements.
- Install exterior storm windows, including cellar
storm windows. For windows that are rarely opened, consider installing
interior storm windows.
- If you plan to replace
your present oil or gas heating system, select a high efficiency unit with
an Annual Fuel Use Efficiency Rating (AFUE) of at least 82%. Many systems
are too large for the space being heated resulting in a considerable waste
of dollars.
- Replace standard curtains with tight sealing,
insulated or quilted window coverings.
