Department of Consumer Protection

The Department of Consumer Protection is comprised of the following divisions which work collectively towards promoting a fair and equitable marketplace:

Consumer Protection

  • Investigates and mediates consumer complaints
  • Enforces the Consumer Protection Code

Weights and Measures

  • Inspects and tests all devices and equipment used to weigh, measure or meter products sold to the consumer
  • Enforces NY State Agriculture and Market Law as it relates to weights and measures

Licensing Services

  • Enforces the Household Hazardous Waste Notification and Box Cutter, Spray Paint and Laser Pointer Notification Laws
  • Licenses Home Improvement Contractors
  • Registers non-bank ATMS
  • Enforces wireless retailer legislation 
  • Assists in the licensing of waste-haulers

Consumer Education and Awareness

  • Raises consumer awareness through publication of informational brochures and public speaking
  • Conducts consumer price surveys
