Shanghai - Wednesday, March 22, 2006
Jianping High School in Pudong

Pudong is the very newly developed, high tech district of the city of Shanghai and Jianping is its high school.  Upon arriving at the high school, after our flight from Beijing, we were pleasantly surprised to see that the school symbol was a “Golden Apple” – which we pointed out to them was also the symbol of Westchester County.  In the Chinese context, the Golden Apple refers to a folk story about striving to the highest goals and, of course, obtaining increasing prosperity – since finding a golden apple is not easy.

This picture is in front of the school’s new multi-story building, which is under construction.

The school has about 2,000 students and about 150 faculty members, half of whom are from outside of China.  This includes American teachers who are helping the students learn to speak conversational English.  The school already has an active program of international exchanges.

The whole delegation met with Mr. Cheng Hong Bing, the principal, and Mr. Qian Jing, the local government’s Director of the International Cooperation Department of the Social Development Bureau, which oversees the schools among other aspects of society.  There were very interested in cooperation and exchanges with Briarcliff.  In general, the Briarcliff staff felt the atmosphere at this school was less intense than at Beijing 101, so it offered a good balance.
