What you should know before adopting |
||||
Adopting a child can be a rewarding, but it is a serious commitment that requires thought and planning. Children need your love, time and energy. Many of the children available for adoption in Westchester are older, have siblings they cannot be separated from or have special needs such as physical, mental or emotional handicaps. Most children waiting for permanent families live in foster homes, group homes or residential facilities. Many of the children have had difficult lives with little love and a lot of disappointment so it is very important that they be placed with families who are willing to accept them and nurture them. "I want a family who will accept me for who I am,'' says14-year-old Dasheen who is awaiting adoption with his 9-year-old sister, Danisha. While adopting such a child can be challenging, it is not without its rewards. Seeing a child develop and helping them on to independence is one of the greatest accomplishments in life.
