Department of Law

The Law Department is comprised of four bureaus, with approximately 60 attorneys, who are under the supervision of the County Attorney, Charlene M. Indelicato. These bureaus are:
  • Contracts and Real Estate Bureau
  • Appeals, Opinions and Legislation Bureau
  • Family Court Bureau
  • Litigation Bureau

In 1937, the County Board of Supervisors authorized the creation of the Department to be headed by a County Attorney. The statutory mandate of the Law Department is to "have charge of and conduct all of the civil law business of the County of Westchester and its departments." The County Attorney is appointed by the County Executive, with the approval of the County Board of Legislators.

The Department of Law seeks to maximize the recovery of monies to which the County is entitled and to minimize the County's liabilities in the most cost effective manner possible. The Department represents the County's officers, boards, departments, agencies and employees. We give legal advice and opinions to County officials.

The Department reviews and prepares the County's contracts and legislation. Its lawyers represent the County in trials, appeals and administrative proceedings. The Department also prosecutes cases in Family Court involving support, child abuse and juvenile delinquency.
