OPERATION SAFE PROM 2009 HAILED AS A SUCCESS

Amount of alcohol seized from prom-goers declines

 

     The Department of Public Safety recently concluded Operation Safe Prom 2009 after conducting vehicle safety checkpoints at 65 proms held in Westchester County<= /st1:PlaceType> during May and June.

     More than 500 limousines and livery vehicles, and more than 150 party and charter buses, passed through county police checkpoints during prom season. Police officers examined the vehicles for safety and to ensure that the drivers operating t= he vehicles had the proper driver’s licenses and Taxi & Limousine Commission permits to do so.

     In addition, off= icers took the opportunity to speak with the prom-goers in those vehicles to ensu= re that everyone was safe and sober. Any alcohol found in the vehicles was confiscated.

     “The goal = of Operation Safe Prom each year is to keep our young people safe,” said County Executive Andy Spano. “We want to make sure that the vehicles = they are traveling in are safe and that no one is under the influence of alcohol= or illegal drugs.”

     Seventeen bottles containing alcohol along with 10 cans of beer were confiscated by county po= lice this prom season. The 27 items marked a dramatic decrease from a year earli= er when 79 items (22 bottles of alcohol and 57 cans of beer) were seized from students or the vehicles they were riding in. No illegal drugs were found t= his year; last year, county police seized six small bags of marijuana last year= during the prom season initiative.

     “Our messa= ge has always been that our young people can have the time of their lives at their prom without involving alcohol or illegal drugs,” Spano said. “= We are heartened by the smaller amount of alcohol that was confiscated because= it shows that students and their parents are getting the message.”

     In addition to t= he safety checkpoints, Operation Safe Prom also included a variety of safety efforts that began prior to the start of prom season:

  • Limousine companies were sent letters reminding t= hem of the penalties for enabling underage drinking.
  • High school principals were sent letters with suggestions on how to involve parents in prom preparations. A free brochure “what every parent should know about prom night…a= nd after” was distributed.
  • The Westchester County STOP-DWI office provided additional funding to local police departments to conduct “party patrols” during the prom season.
  • Compliance checks were conducted at stores around= the county to prevent the sale of alcohol to minors,
