WESTCHESTER COUNTY
SUMMER MUSIC CENTER
at Westchester County Center
in White Plains
A Comprehensive Music Training Program for
Young People entering Grades 3 through 12
SOMETHING FOR
EVERYONE
The program is designed for students entering grades 3 through
12; there is no audition required. Beginners receive an excellent
introduction to their instrument from an expert teacher, while advanced
students receive instruction to refine their techniques and perfect
their musical skills. Many students who have had prior training on a
particular instrument opt to use the summer at WSMC as an opportunity to
explore a new instrument. Students who have had extensive musical
training enjoy playing challenging repertory with other accomplished
students and faculty.
60 YEARS OF
EXCELLENCE
Since 1948, the Westchester Summer Music Center has been
providing excellence in musical training for Westchester's young people.
Structured much like a camp, the Music Center offers a unique
combination of musical training, performing, recreation and
socialization for young people with similar interests. In six short
weeks, the participants can receive the equivalent of one whole school
year of musical training.
PLAYING AND PERFORMING
All students are encouraged to study two instruments: a primary
instrument and a secondary instrument. Instruction is given daily on
both instruments. Classes are divided according to age as well as
ability, and all students perform in at least one ensemble: orchestra,
band, chorus, woodwind, string, brass or jazz ensemble. Instruction in
chorus and music theory is recommended for all students and required for
new musicians. Piano instruction is offered for beginners only and is
offered on a first-come, first served basis. Supervised age-appropriate
games and recreation are also offered to all students between scheduled
classes.
FACULTY
The faculty at the Westchester Summer Music Center is composed of mature
adults who are accomplished professionals in their own fields, and have
extensive experience in teaching young people.
