Cranberry
Lake Preserve, a 190-acre property
located near Kensico Reservoir, comprised forest, wetlands, and a
10-acre lake that was carved by glaciers thou- sands of years ago. There
are three miles of trails, including a loop around the lake and others
that traverse the predominantly northern oak-hickory forest. The
wetlands support a habitat for a variety of wildlife, including
migratory birds and spotted turtles. On the property are vestiges of a
19th century farmhouse and a large quarry that provided rocks and gravel
for the construction of Kensico Dam.
Interpretive programs, led by trained environmental educators, are
offered year-round for school, scout and community groups. Programs are
approximately one hour in length and can accommodate up to 30
participants, for a fee of $100. Program content can be tailored to all
grade and interest levels from pre-school to adult.
