A Message from the
County Executive

Welcome to the Golf Westchester 2007 season. I hope that this year you'll have a chance to play on one of our six excellent courses. I am really proud of these golf courses. They offer first rate playing conditions, affordable prices  with the convenience of practically being in your own back yard. I know that most of you have your favorite course where you always play, and I want to thank you for continued loyalty.

We are pleased to be offering the same great courses at the same great prices. We will continue to offer excellent savings and rewards programs such as our Frequent Golfer Rewards. Through this program you will receive a free round for every 25 you play.

If you just can't get enough of Golf Westchester, try the replay program, which gives you a second round of golf on the same course that very day for a discounted price.

As the season begins, please pardon our appearance at Sprain Lake while we complete the work to significantly improve the playability of the 10th fairway and 11th tee. The tee will be tripled in size and the 10th fairway has been leveled for better play. (Read more about it in the story in this newsletter.)

Remember to sign up to receive Links via e-mail and for the Parks E-Club to receive great offers and news about the golf courses. Check out www.westchestergov.com/parks/golf for more information.

Have fun this season on our courses. I hope to see you out there. As always, have a great game!

Extensive Work on Sprain's 10th Fairway and 11th Tee

Sprain Lake's 10th fairway and 11th tee are undergoing extensive facelifts to improve their playability.

The project, which began in November, involved leveling 40,000 square feet of the 10th fairway and tripling the size of the 11th tee from 1,500 square feet to 5,000 square feet, creating a generous four-tier tee.

As part of the project, the cart path adjacent to the fairway and tee was repositioned to ease golfer access and improve safety.

The project also involved a substantial amount of tree pruning work and brush removal to improve playability and to open up some of Sprain Lake's great vistas. The trimming work will have the side benefit of improving air circulation and allowing more sunlight to shine through to the turf in certain areas.

About 15,000 cubic yards of material were used to expand the tee. About 1,500 feet of black top and 400 feet of Belgian block curbing material were used for the cart paths. A total of 25,000 square feet of sod will be required for the entire project.

The work is scheduled to be completed in the spring. In the meantime, there will be a temporary green on the 10th hole and a temporary 11th tee for golfers to play. Thanks for you patience while we improve your golf course.

Through an innovative agreement, a Yonkers contractor paid for the construction work in exchange for a sewer easement for a housing development on Grassy Sprain Road in Yonkers. This saved taxpayers $90,000.
