A Message from the County Executive
Just
when we were getting good and having fun, the cold weather moves
in and another golf season comes to an end. I hope you had time
to enjoy a few days out on one of the county's six courses.
This
year we worked hard to make golf more affordable and accessible.
We "bought back" a round for those who played 25
rounds or more. We offered twilight and supertwilight rates.
This fall, we premiered a new combination golf cart and greens
fee that saved golfers who played after 11 a.m. from 20 percent
to 50 percent. We tried it in November, and it was so successful
we extended it to the end of the year. In just a few weeks, more
than 700 rounds of golf were played by golfers taking advantage
of this discount.
In
2006, we also made more use of e-mail blasts to provide quick
information and to announce golf specials. (Sign up at www.westchestergov.com/parks/golf)
During
the year we partnered with the Journal News to bring the
second Westchester County Golf Show to the County Center in
White Plains and it was a tremendous success with more than
3,000 visitors. County courses were well represented as were
other golf courses, resorts, equipment manufacturers and
vendors.
Golf
courses are scheduled to close on December 31. Check our website
for any updates. Have a great winter and remember to stay fit
for next season.

It's Winter, So
Practice, Practice, Practice
Putting on the Carpet, Chip
Shots on the Couch
By Tom Avezzano, Sprain Lake Golf Pro
Winter
is a time of freezing temperatures, rain, sleet and snow and it's also a
great time to practice golf. Golf courses may be closed and the weather
may be too awful to go outdoors, but there are ways to stay fit for your
favorite sport.
Wintering in Florida or some
other warm spot can be an answer for the fortunate few. However, if you
can’t spend three months in the sun, here are some ways to get in some
practice during the foul weather months of winter.
First it's a good idea to
have some basic indoor golf implements handy, including a putting cup, a
chipping/practice mat, a practice club and wiffle balls.
If your home or office has a
carpet, place your cup down and practice making short putts until you
improve. Then practice getting the distance right on the longer putts.
Putting consists of more than 40 percent of the average golfer's total
strokes.
