Runs: Now through November 29, 2008
SPEND AN AUTUMN WEEKEND TOURING SCENIC Another “staycation” tip: three of the most celebrated and scenic parks in the County Parks system are taking part in “All Fired Up! A Celebration of Clay in Westchester,” a countywide celebration and exhibition of the clay arts, now through November 29. Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River and Lasdon Park & Arboretum and Muscoot Farm, both in Somers are all within a few minutes’ drive of each other so pack a lunch and make a day of it! “Scattered Galaxy” by Michel Louis Viala can be seen on the lush sweeping grounds, gardens and groves at Lasdon Park & Arboretum. Viala’s work has a unique texture and color that is produced by the fire-and-smoke process of raku-fired ceramics. Lasdon’s hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week. “Birds and Beasts” by Susan Halls at Muscoot Farm, both small pieces inside the main house and her enormous bunnies outside in the barnyard amid the farm’s live animals, highlight the artist’s affection for and fascination with the diversity of animals. Farm hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. seven days a week to view the outdoor sculptures; the Main House gallery is open Saturdays and Sundays, noon to 4 p.m. Gallery in the Park at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation will present the work of two artists. “Keith Renner: New Work” is installed outside the front entrance to the gallery. His hard-edged construction strikes an interesting contrast to the park’s lush foliage and gentle hills. “Sally Brogden: Recent Works” will be shown inside the gallery. Her work encompasses abstract objects that embrace the precision of mass-production and the softness of anatomical form. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., seven days a week; the outdoor sculptures can be viewed from dawn to dusk, also seven days a week. The reservation’s amenities include picnic areas and tent and lean-to camping. Admission to all three parks is free; at Ward Pound Ridge Reservation there is a parking fee of $4 per car with a Westchester County Park Pass ($8 without the pass). Directions to the parks are available at www.westchestergov.com/parks or by calling (914) 864-7000. The displays in county parks are part of the Art in Parks program, which brings changing exhibitions to the parks for the enjoyment of the public. All Fired Up!, called the biggest cultural collaboration ever in Westchester, has a total of 600 participating artists at 68 venues countywide. The event is organized by the Westchester Arts Council and the Clay Art Center. Full information about All Fired Up! is available at www.allfiredup.info
