THE “EARTH MACHINE” IS NOW ON SALE
If it sounds like science fiction it is…
sort of. The Earth Machine compost bin employs “Westchester County has sold compost bins for years at special events,” Spano said. “Now, we’re distributing these ‘Earth Machine’ bins during regular park hours at Glen Island Park in New Rochelle, Lasdon Park and Arboretum in Somers, Lenoir Preserve in Yonkers, Muscoot Farm in Somers and Ward Pound Ridge Reservation in Cross River. We want to make it easier than ever for residents to get started turning their kitchen and yard waste into valuable compost to add to their lawns, gardens and houseplants.” Spano said that in addition to the value for residents in creating their own rich, moist soil amendments that can cut down on fertilization and watering needs, home composting can significantly reduce the amount of trash that municipalities haul away for disposal. The Earth Machine can cut down on household garbage by as much as 30 per cent by spending just 10 minutes a week using it. And, compost increases soil porosity, which contributes to reducing stormwater runoff into our waterways. The Earth Machine, standing just under three feet tall with a sliding door to prevent animal entry and a twist top for easy ventilation control, snaps together easily and installs with no special tools needed or holes to dig. Each unit will be sold at these parks for $50. More information, including park hours and driving directions, is available at www.westchestergov.com/parks.
