Activities
Croton
Point Park is the largest
peninsula on the Hudson River, with four miles of river access, a rich
natural and human history, and a tremendous variety of flora and
fauna. A variety of programs are offered at the park's nature
center for children of all ages.
The
number of participants and program fees vary based upon the program and
the number of attendees. Programs are flexible and adaptable to curriculum guidelines
and new programs can be created to fit your needs.
Nature
Hike Students will use their observational skills and senses to discover
a wide variety of plant and animal life. Topics vary according to
the season and teacher specifications. Grades K- Adult
Beach
Exploration Students will discover the creatures that live along the river's
edge and their adaptations for such an existence. See what the
tide has brought to shore and what it will take out with it. This
is a walk that changes every time it's taken. Grades K- Adult
In
Search of the Past Students will have the opportunity to discover Croton Point's rich
Native American history and participate in hands-on activities.
They will also examine local artifacts and take a walk in search of
evidence left behind from the park's first inhabitants.Grades K-
Adult
Brackish
Water Ecology Learn about the river by seeing who lives in it! Seining
("sweeping" through the river with a 20-foot-long net) will
give students a close look at the plants and creatures that live in the
Hudson River, and how they are
connected and interdependent.Grades K- Adult
History
Hike Explore the park and learn about its previous land usage, the Dutch
settlers, its major role in the Revolutionary War, the 19th century
buildings, including a one room school house, and take a tour of the
historic wine cellars. Grades 3- Adult
The
Hudson River: "The Tidal Story" Explore the many components of the Hudson River through interactive
activities focusing on the tides and salinity levels, with an estuary
overview. Grades 2 - Adult
Survival
Skills and Nature Study Learn survival techniques that are used today and some from long
ago. Students will build a debris hut, identify what to bring on a
hike, and learn how to cope in a threatening situation. Grades 4-
Adult
Bald
Eagle Walk Croton Point Park is a haven for bald eagles over the winter
months. The students will take a walk in search of eagles while
learning about the Endangered Species Act, the success story of the bald
eagles, and fascinating facts about this majestic bird of prey.
(Please remember that sightings are not guaranteed, as these are wild
birds, but there is a strong possibility of seeing some fly overhead,
perched in trees or on the ice floes.) Grades 4- Adult
