PRESS RELEASE

CONSERVATION CAFÉ TO FOCUS ATTENTION ON
EARTHWORMS IN NOVEMBER

They can be good or they can be bad, and their behavior can be downright ugly. Attendees will learn all about these slimy but valued creatures during the next Conservation Café titled “Worms: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly,” on Friday, November 21, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., at the Kessel Student Center at Pace University in Pleasantville.

Naturalists, environmentalists, students and the public are invited to learn the basics about earthworms, including benefits they provide as well as the challenges posed by invasive species.

Speakers and topics for the café include:

  • “Earthworm Composting” will be discussed by Helanna Bratman, Green Teen Project Coordinator of Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Dutchess County.
  • “Soil Ecology” will be presented by Dr. Stephen Wagener, Associate Professor/Chairperson, Division of Biological and Environmental Sciences, Western Connecticut State University.
  • Faith Kostel-Hughes, Associate Professor of Biology, College of New Rochelle, will discuss current  research on earthworms.

A question and answer period will be included.

Advance pre-registration is requested by calling (914) 864-7047; or, walk-in registration will be accepted on the day of the event beginning at 8 a.m. Beverages will be served; participants should bring their own coffee mug. Carpooling is encouraged.

The Conservation Café and Conversations on Conservation (CoC) provide a forum for dialogue about current environmental issues.  Private citizens, members of concerned organizations, municipal planners and others hear the latest information and have an opportunity to network.

Sponsors are Westchester County’s Parks and Planning departments, Pace University, Friends of Westchester County Parks, Teatown Lake Reservation, the Greenburgh Nature Center, and Federated Conservationists of Westchester County.

Pace University is located on Bedford Road (Route 117) in Pleasantville.
