Information on Antidepressant Medication

If medication is recommended

If your child is already on medication

If you are the parent or caregiver of a child/ adolescent who is depressed and antidepressant medication has been recommended as part of the treatment it can be difficult to know what
to do.

There have been recent concerns and warnings issued about whether or

not certain antidepressant medications could increase the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in children and adolescents.

To help educate yourself about the issues involved click here for the full Office of Mental Health (OMH) report.

If you want further information, have any questions or you wish to discuss any of your concerns you should call your child’s pediatrician or psychiatrist.  If they are too busy to talk to you on the phone, take the time to schedule an appointment - go and meet with them.  You will most likely be charged for this appointment and should ask about the fee when requesting the consultation.  You need to have a good working relationship with your child or adolescents’ doctor and feel comfortable when thinking about the treatment of your child.  You will be a very important part of the treatment process.
