Message from the County Executive

Many people suffer from depression in silence – too embarrassed or ashamed to get help. Sometimes they don’t even know why they feel so bad.

It’s important to recognize that depression is an illness. It can change your feelings about yourself and interfere with work, family life, friendships and the ability to care for yourself. Yet, just like diabetes, asthma, or heart disease, it can be treated.

Getting information is the first step towards taking action to feel better. If you think you or someone you know might be suffering from depression, the most important thing to do is get educated about the illness.  You will then be in a better position to make the right decisions.

Westchester County recently established a Depression Support Network to help our residents learn more about this silent illness. Our Department of Community Mental Health has established a special phone line to give out information and make referrals to treatment providers if needed.  The number is (914) 995-5236.

We have also established this new website and a speaker’s bureau available to local organizations and businesses.

Hopefully we can make a difference.
