Calling all Autism Service Providers!
For the first time ever, Autism Speaks will have a Community Resources tent at our Annual Westchester/Fairfield Walk Now for Autism on Sunday, June 8 at Manhattanville College. Registration for the Community Resources tent is $100 for non-profits and $200 for profit organizations. Anyone interested in participating can download an application form here or call (914) 934-5138.

 

Want to avoid the hassles of walk day registration and t-shirt lines?
Autism Speaks will be at several locations throughout the Westchester & Fairfield County areas the week prior to the Walk to give walk day t-shirts to those individuals who have raised $100 or more and to collect any donations that you may have prior to the walk. Donation drop off and Walk t-shirt pick up dates and times are listed below. More dates will be announced shortly.

EVERYONE’S ACT: THEATRE WORKSHOP

Series of six two-hour theatre workshops for special needs students and adults, ages 14-40.

Everyone’s Act will be held on the White Plains Performing Arts Center stage.  A teaching artist professional and an experienced special education teacher will teach the workshops.  The program is designed for special education students to be able to learn and use various forms of thought exploration and expression with other non-disabled students.  Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays, June 24th – Aug. 6, 6:30pm – 8:30pm

SOCIAL SKILLS GROUP PROGRAM
Jewish Family Service of Rockland County is introducing a social skills group program for children ages 8-18 previously diagnosed with High Functioning Autism, Asperger's Syndrome, PDD, NOS, Nonverbal Learning Disability or Social Anxiety. GREYSTONE PROGRAMS PROJECT FAME – DAY HABILITATION PROGRAM WITHOUT WALLS 
A unique and individualized program is accepting referrals for those individuals with Autism and other development disabilities to participate in the day habilitation program without walls.
Located in Poughkeepsie, positive relationships have been developed with community services and volunteer programs throughout the local community. They look forward to serving more individuals interested in meeting new people, helping senior citizens, donating time to area food pantries and churches and much more. THE RECREATION TEAM

The Recreation Team offers weekend trips for high functioning developmentally disabled children ages 16+.  The program is year round and meets at trip locations throughout Westchester.  Members are required to pay activities fees depending on the different trips they attend.  There is also a summer travel program designed to introduce individuals to traveling and life skills.  There is a schedule mailed out every 2 months filled with activities and trips, to obtain this schedule you must call the number above.

We still have room for such events as Billy Joel concert, 4th of July trip, trip to California and a trip to Mohegan Sun, which is on June 7th.  We also have scholarships (reimbursement) for those in economic need residing in Westchester at home with their families.

"Strikeouts for Autism" Promotion to Raise Money for Autism Speaks

Frozen Ropes of Long Island, a premier baseball and softball-training academy, and WFAN, the New York Mets radio station, are supporting Autism Speaks through a unique promotion, "Strikeouts for Autism." Every time a Mets pitcher strikes out a batter for the rest of the season, Frozen Ropes will donate $25 to Autism Speaks. WFAN will announce the totals at the end of the broadcast of each game and invite people to visit the Autism Speaks web site for more information.

Honest and unvarnished, Lauren Thierry-Watkins’ revealing documentary conveys the everyday realities of being a parent of a child with autism. One in every 150 children in the United States is now diagnosed with autism, yet most Americans are unaware of its impact and the challenges faced by dedicated parents. Thierry-Watkins, herself the mother of an autistic son, raises awareness by profiling eight children and their parents, who have endured not only exhausting financial and emotional burdens but also shame, guilt, criticism, and ridicule. Screened at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival.
