Family Support

Families will experience stress before, during, and after a diagnosis.  Parents often consider family support a vital part of an overall intervention plan and feel they do not get enough help from professionals regarding what to do and where to obtain services.  Studies show that parents with more support from other parents, family, friends, and  community organizations have less stress.  Families of children with a ASD have assisted one another with finding help in their own communities.

There are many different types of support groups including:

  • National organizations with local chapters

  • Parent-run organizations

  • Local organizations such as schools

  • Special interest support groups

  • Online support groups

Family Support Services have been also been developed through the New York State Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.  They provide support to families and ease the difficulties and demands involved in caring for an individual with developmental disabilities.  Family Support Services are funded through the Westchester Family Supports Services Consumer Council as a part of the Hudson Valley Developmental Disabilities Service Office.  These services include parent training, reimbursement, respite services, crisis intervention, in-home care, recreation, social supports and substance abuse services to individuals residing in the community.
