Register for Residential Services

Some adults at the higher functioning end of autism are able to live with various degrees of independence. Success in independent living is more likely in individuals who have mastered effective communication skills and have more cognitive resources. More children who are diagnosed early and receive appropriate interventions have been better prepared for adult responsibilities.    Individuals with lower cognitive abilities and more severe communication disorders can transition into Adult Day Services, such as day treatment, day habilitations, supportive work, prevocational services and sheltered employment. 

The individual and their family should begin to think about whether they may want help with  residential placement and, if so, a time-frame for placement. Many levels of residential support are available based upon the individual's abilities. An individual must first register with the Department of Community Mental Health (DCMH) and meet eligibility requirements with the Office of Mental Retardation and Developmental Disabilities.  Click here for the registry application.  If you need any information or help to access these services please call (914) 995-5244.
