The Westchester County Department of Health today announced that the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has confirmed that the agent responsible for the mosquito-borne encephalitis outbreak is West Nile virus.

"The recent confirmation by CDC that the West Nile-like virus in our area actually is West Nile virus in no way changes the recommendations that have previously existed," stated Dr. Harold N. Adel, Westchester County Health Commissioner. "Residents should continue take precautions to prevent mosquito bites until several hard frosts have killed the mosquitoes."

Updated information on West Nile virus can be found on the Westchester County Department of Health Website, www.westchestergov.com.
