Both breast cancer and cervical cancer can be detected and treated best when they are discovered early.  Westchester County Department of Health provides screening services and referrals necessary to protect your health.

Breast cancer kills more Westchester women than any other type of cancer except respiratory related cancers. To combat breast cancer, the Health Department conducts a Breast Health Program designed to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages  through regular self-examinations, mammography, and clinical breast examinations.  Thousands of mammograms are provided annually to women through this program.

The Breast Health Program, funded by the New York State Department of Health, is a vital part of the County's ongoing efforts to help low-income women detect breast cancer at the early stages, when it can be most successfully treated.

To attempt to lower the risk of death from breast cancer in women, the Health Department offers breast cancer screening services for medically underserved women.  Women with breast or cervical problems may be referred to the Breast Health Program from private providers or clinics and access program services by calling 914-813-5260.  The program has proven successful in attracting persons considered most at risk of breast cancer death.

The Breast Health Program offers:

  • No-cost  mammograms, as well as free professional breasts examinations and instruction in breast self-examination

  • A public education campaign, which emphasizes the message that one can survive breast cancer. This campaign utilizes a successful bilingual multimedia approach which includes print and broadcast media, bus posters, pamphlets, flyers and public service announcements.

 Cervical Cancer Screening

Cervical cancer can be prevented through safer sexual practices and routine screening.  Health services provided at the health department clinics include;
No-cost cervical screening (Pap smears) at Health Department district offices at White Plains, New Rochelle, and Yonkers.
Referral for no-cost cervical screening and follow-up services to community partners including; Planned Parenthood and the Neighborhood Health Centers

A community-based breast health partnership maximizes local resources to educate, motivate and  recruit eligible women and to coordinate breast screening and follow-up services. Partnership participants include the Health Department, the American Cancer Society, human service agencies, businesses and medical care providers.
