Health challenge kicks off public health week celebration. Spano &
other officials compete against kids in obstacle course contest. Board
of Health presents "Distinguished Public Health Service" Award.

County Executive
Andy Spano is encouraging municipal officials throughout Westchester
County to take the challenge and partner with the County to make each
community healthier.
From April 1st through May 15th, 2007, community leaders are encouraged
to create and implement activities or programs within their
municipalities that promote healthy living.
Some Startling Statistics:
During 2004, almost 18,000 Westchester County residents were hospitalized
due to cardiovascular and other diseases of the circulatory
system. Many of these hospitalizations were preventable.
During 2004, nearly 18,000 Westchester County residents were hospitalized
due to a diabetes-related diagnosis. Diabetes and its
complications can be prevented.
Medical expenses attributed to both overweight and obesity accounted for
9.1% of total U.S. medical expenditures in 1998 and may have
reached as high as $78.5 billion.
Every day, approximately 4,000 American youth aged 12-17 try their first
cigarette.
It’s time to Turn the Tide on these statistics.
The list of possible activities that meet the challenge is
endless, and can be customized to your own community’s needs.
Conduct a healthy cooking demonstration at a local restaurant.
Build a new playing field for youth sports.
Create a community walking club.
Conduct exercise classes at a local community center or
faith-based organization.
Challenge your residents to compete with you on a weight loss
regimen.
