Outreach, education and
awareness programs continue
to be an important component of AIDS response. Implementation of HIV Names
Reporting and Partner Notification Registration has begun with highly trained
staff working with medical providers and patients to assure partner notification
for HIV exposure and increase patient referrals to appropriate community
services.
Westchester County
AIDS Council
The
Westchester AIDS Council was formally established in early 1992 by the
County Executive to address pertinent issues involving the prevention and
spread of AIDS and to assure the compassionate care of individuals
afflicted with AIDS and with HIV infection.
With the
disease now disproportionately affecting residents from communities of
color, new leaders work through the Westchester
County AIDS Council to address the changing needs of AIDS
epidemiology and stop the spread of this deadly virus.
The goals
of the AIDS Council include:
Education
and Prevention: teaching children, young adults, and adults how to
protect themselves from HIV infection and AIDS; reducing their risk of
infection by modifying their behavior; and building peer support networks
for delivery of risk reduction messages.
Care:
ensuring that an appropriate care and support system exists throughout
Westchester for people living with or affected by HIV infection and AIDS,
their families, friends and care givers.
Funding:
securing additional funding wherever possible to further the Council's
mission.
