Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease of the airways.  More than 5 million children nationwide suffer from the condition.  In Westchester, an estimated 48,000 people have asthma - 25 percent of them children.  More cases are reported each year, especially among the very young, minorities and the poor.  For children under 4, asthma rates nationwide jumped 160 percent between 1980 and 1994.
